Most people don’t know exactly how bail bonds work, unless they have had to use the services of a bail bondsman or know someone who is a bail agent. Basically a judge or magistrate sets the amount of the bond based on the crime, the background of the defendant and the potential risk to public safety if that person is released. The family or friends of the defendant will pay a premium to a bail agent, typically 10%-15% of the bond amount. The defendant is then released to prepare for their trial and take care of their responsibilities. The defendant must show up for ALL court dates or the bond will forfeit and they will be remanded back into custody.

Every state has different laws and different requirements to obtain your bail bond license. Typically, the process involves some kind of pre-licensing education and then the obtaining of a license through the local regulatory body. Some states require minimum amounts of work experience in the bail business as well. The best way to find out the requirements in your state is to contact the regulatory body for bail, which is typically the Department of Insurance.
