The most popular topic circulating around the bail profession over the past few weeks is the upcoming vote on Amendment 1 in Tennessee. This amendment would essentially rewrite Section 15 of Tennessee’s state constitution, adding over 70 additional crimes for which a defendant can be detained without bail. Proponents of the amendment claim the change will make us safer. Those that are opposed to the change believe that it is government overreach that will end up costing Tennessee taxpayers millions.
This past week Amendment 1 was the topic of both the Bail in the Midwest podcast and the Bail Post podcast. Tennessee legislator Vincent Dixie was on the Bail in the Midwest podcast and President of the Tennessee Association of Professional Bail Agents, Shelly Alexander, was on the Bail Post with AIA Surety’s Vice President of Communications, Eric Granof.
